Longtime Fort Worth residents Brad and Marilyn Brewster, pictured with Ilya Shmukler, are hosts to Ilya while he participates in the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at Bass Hall downtown. For the Brewsters, this is their second time home-hosting a Cliburn competitor. For 22-year-old Ilya, this his first trip to the USA, but he and the Brewsters hope for many more.
Every four years, the Cliburn brings 30 of the world’s top young pianists to Fort Worth for three weeks’ of incredible music in a grueling competition for its gold medal, $50,000 cash prize, and three years’ worth of career management. From its first competition in 1962, the Cliburn earned a well-deserved reputation for excellence through its detailed planning and organization; high-quality competitors, juries, and orchestra (the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra); and Fort Worth’s well-known friendliness.
For Brad and Marilyn, the immediate task is to continue enable Ilya to do his best in all of the Cliburn’s events and enjoy the world-class music he brings to their home.
